Trinity Free Church is on the edges of Oxmoor and Hartford in Huntingdon, about 20 miles from Cambridge city centre. The original church (with steeple) was in Old Huntingdon, then a rural market town. With the development in the 1960’s of a new housing estate in Oxmoor to provide overspill from London, the church responded to a vision to be part of this new community.
It is a prayerful, worshipping church and members and visitors are assured of a warm welcome. While the congregation is not as large as in the 1970s, today’s regular 30 to 35 worshippers are joyful and prayerful. In recent months, 3 younger people with no previous experience of church and who described themselves as ‘feeling lost’ have joined the fellowship. They have since come to describe the church as ‘theirs’ and two have been baptised, the most recent in April.
Currently without a moderator or minister, the five deacons and the fellowship ensure that everything that needs to be done in church life, including church meetings, has continued; and they are very grateful for the support they receive from visiting speakers. Weekly activities include Bible Study and Prayer, a ‘Drop-In’ – time to chat, browse second-hand books and jigsaws or just sit quietly with a drink and biscuit – and a sewing club. Through the hire of their three halls, the church also has strong links with the community: from uniformed organisations, through ‘Darby and Joan’ and an after school teenage café, to karate and a Lithuanian yoga group. There is a lot going on. Since January, the church has been holding monthly prayer meetings specifically focused on the future, looking upward and forward.
