Pathways to Ministry
There are two main pathways to Baptist Ministry:
Baptist Accredited Ministry
Many people sense a calling from God to serve the Church through pastoral leadership, mission, chaplaincy, pioneering ministry, or other forms of accredited ministry. For some, this calling grows gradually through serving faithfully in their local church; for others, it emerges through a deepening awareness of God’s guidance and gifting over time.
Baptist Accredited Ministry is a recognised pathway for those who are called to serve more widely within Baptist life and ministry. Accredited ministers are trained, formed, and recognised by Baptists Together for ministry across the Baptist family, rather than within one particular local setting (see page on Recognised Local Ministry). This may include serving as pastors, chaplains, pioneers, evangelists, or in other accredited ministry roles.
Training for accredited ministry combines theological study, practical ministry experience, spiritual formation, and ongoing discernment. Alongside academic learning, ministers-in-training are supported through mentoring, placements, and reflective practice as they continue to grow in character, leadership, and calling. For those who have already received some theological or ministerial training, there are bespoke pathways that can be discussed and tailored to each situation.
Within the EBA, those exploring accredited ministry are supported through conversations with our team, as they are guided through the application process. We recognise that every calling is unique, and we seek to help people discern how God may be leading them to serve.

Recognised Local Ministry
Many people offer valuable ministry within their local church or community but find that training to be an accredited Baptist minister is either not their calling or not possible in their circumstances. Yet we want to support and recognise those who faithfully serve their church or communities in this way as pastors, pioneers, evangelists, chaplains, or children’s youth or families workers. Others – young adults, especially, perhaps – are tentatively exploring a calling to ministry, but feel that their calling at this moment is to their particular location. For all of these, BU have introduced a new category of Recognised Local Minister (RLM).
The RLM pathway is ‘recognised’ by their Regional Association because they have undertaken a programme of training and formation shaped by Baptists Together. They are ‘local’ because their recognition relates to a particular ministry and setting. They are recognised as a ‘minister’ because they are entrusted by a Baptist church with spiritual oversight within the church or its mission.
Within the EBA, RLM trainees take part in The Learning Collective at one of our EBA hubs. Alongside their studies, trainees receive mentoring and take part in a spiritual formation group, providing space to reflect on their ministry, their practice, and what God may be calling them to become.
