Weekly Prayer Focus: Norwich Central Baptist Church

Week 24

Norwich Central Baptist Church is, as its name implies, centrally placed in Norwich and is a lively, outward-looking fellowship led by Tom Madders, their minister.  The fellowship is a mix of families and individuals who reflect the ethnic diversity of the city.  They also have a thriving Portuguese congregation led by Paulo and Claudia, and joint services are held regularly, which promote a one-church philosophy.

The church’s regular activities are many and cover the full breadth of life both within the church and within the surrounding community, including a women’s ministry programme, regular men’s ministry events and a lively children’s and youth programme. The building is also a food bank distribution centre, and 12-step support groups also use it.  Excitingly, there are three baptisms planned for the summer.

Being a large building with different rooms, classrooms and a sanctuary, the church is currently seeking to improve its premises and aims to raise £1 million to ‘raise the roof’, literally.   The first phase has begun, and scaffolding put in place.  In late summer, there will be the second phase, and then next year, the third and final phase – the sanctuary, which has a different level of roof.

As they seek God’s will for the future, prayers would be valued for:

  • The roof project: as they are trying not to make this their main focus due to their outward-looking approach, and want to get the balance right.
  • Being in the city centre, there are always avenues of ministry to explore, but as some members live outside Norwich, they can be short of volunteers at times.
  • An Alpha course, which is planned for September and will be the first one for two years.
  • They are currently without a youth worker, and whilst not progressing with this just now, would value prayers for its timing. They hope a new office manager will soon be in post and ask for prayers for a smooth transition.
