Weekly Prayer Focus

Each week the Eastern Baptist Association will produce a Weekly Prayer Focus for a different member church across the region. We hope you will be able to use the article and accompanying PowerPoint and PDF to encourage you and your churches in prayers for others in the association.

Mill Road Baptist Church is located in a busy and diverse area of Cambridge, where there is continual change within the multicultural community. Students and young families often come and go, which brings both challenges and opportunities for the church, which has been a faithful presence in the area for many years. The church is currently in a pastoral vacancy and is led by its Deacons, Brother Andrew Adekunle and Taiwo Oladokun. They are thankful for the teaching and ministry of regular visiting speakers and ministers. They have a morning service every Sunday and the church meets for Bible study once a fortnight. Union Church is situated in the coastal town of Hunstanton, in northwest Norfolk. The Church is a union of Baptist and U.R.C. The church, is being by led Revd. Chris Collict with some very capable Deacons, following 6 years in an interregnum, which brought a mix of blessings and challenges. Union has 24 active, mature members, with 40 people in regular attendance, along with some four-legged friends, as the church is dog-friendly! The Summer months bring in many Tourists. The church runs two Bible Study groups; Fabulous Fridays Fellowship follows a more traditional approach, and the Tuesday group uses creative ways to approach God’s word. Potter Street Baptist Church is in Harlow, Essex, with council estates all around. Alison Taylor, their minister, has a passion for the community and is leading a vision to double the congregation over the next 10 years as part of God’s vision, whilst recognising that everyone equally has a part to play. Alison very much sees pastoring as being a constant presence to the church and community and is aided by a team of leaders and also by Sarah Mitchell who is their Children’s, Youth and Family Worker and is a Minister in Training. Within EBA we are blessed that a number of our ministers and churches are actively involved in chaplaincy roles. This week our focus is on Chaplaincy in Education. We spoke with Cherie from Cambridgeshire and Liz from Suffolk Cherie says the Pastoral Support Work we deliver provides mentoring and pastoral support to students individually and in groups, looking at resilience, self-esteem and relationships. We also deliver some Personal Development and Personal, Social and Health Education lessons. We are available to chat with Sixth Form students while giving out free hot chocolates. The Spiritual Support Work includes running or facilitating weekly Christian Union groups, delivering Religion, Philosophy and Ethics lessons and assemblies during the year.
