Weekly Prayer Focus

Each week the Eastern Baptist Association will produce a Weekly Prayer Focus for a different member church across the region. We hope you will be able to use the article and accompanying PowerPoint and PDF to encourage you and your churches in prayers for others in the association.

New Growth Ministry is a Pioneer Ministry that was founded eight years ago under the leadership of Rev. Lynsey Heslegrave. Lynsey felt called to establish a worshipping community in the growing residential area where she lived, in the north of Colchester. A small group, with a real heart for their local area, meet weekly in homes, and there is a monthly Forest Church in the local Highwoods Country Park where Lynsey seeks to engage her local community with God through creation. The ethos of the Church is to build relationships with the local community; two members are volunteer chaplains in a local secondary school, and links with the areas Primary Schools are being fostered. Holland-on-Sea Baptist Church is a very friendly and welcoming village church. They are an older congregation focused on outreach to their demographic, from Holland and nearby Clacton. All who join the church say they were welcomed straight away, and they are known for their friendliness within the village. This is seen in their small groups – known as Care groups, where they pray for one another, alongside fellowship and bible study. Their primary outreach is their monthly friendship club and weekly lunch club, both of which see between 20 and 40 people attend, the majority of whom are not from the church. Halstead Baptist Church is situated in the picturesque town of Halstead, a short distance from the High Street.  Halstead is a dormitory town, with many residents travelling considerable distances for employment.  There are several primary schools and a comprehensive secondary school. The fellowship at Halstead is currently in a period of ministerial vacancy.  Their previous Minister having been called to a new church at the beginning of 2024.  They are well supported by visiting preachers each Sunday and by Rev. Ellie Ake, the Moderator, who is offering guidance and encouragement. Members of the congregation meet mid-week for bible study, fellowship and prayer. Harston Baptist Church lies in a village five miles south of Cambridge ideally situated for commuting to Cambridge and London. The population of around 1800 is largely affluent, although there is some social housing. The story of the church began in 1759 when a vicar John Berridge from Bedfordshire preached in the main street. Originally meeting in barns a church was established in 1786 and our present building was built in 1870. We have approximately 40 gathering for worship on a Sunday morning. Scott Paton has been their minister since October 2011 and hails originally from Peterhead in Scotland. The church’s vision is to maintain an upward, inward and outward focus.
