Council Summary November 2023

Fiona welcomed David to his first meeting as Team Leader and due to his position as trustee. In total there were 11 trustees present, 2 apologies and both Claire and Gale as RM’s were present by invitation.

Fiona read from Proverbs 3:5-6 and referred to verses in Isaiah where God makes a new way, and linked this to where the EBA is currently finding itself following a change in personnel.

EBA Secretary led some Trustee Training reminding them of their responsibilities according to the Charities Act and duties as Directors with the Companies Act. The training finished with some questions that trustees should ask themselves when facing making decisions in their role as Trustees. This led to an exercise with a focus on governance in which council members were asked to discuss the role of the council and the role description of a Trustee.

Further consideration will be given to governance and ensuring that the trustee board is fit for purpose and able to seek the best outcomes for the EBA as a whole.

EBA Treasurer presented the budget for 2024 which included a financial summary up to the end of September 2023. Richard reminded the council that they were agreeing to a deficit budget and would be using reserves which once used are gone. The financial situation should stay high in our priorities.

Gale and Claire both gave reports of what they have been involved in since the last Council meeting. Both shared some highlights from the last couple of months.

Trustees formally agreed that for the time being we will not be seeking to appoint another Regional Minister. The team had discussed ensuring that churches had a point of contact and put forward a proposal which trustees approved. The details of which will be emailed out to all churches and ministers.

Trustees were updated on the progress being made to appoint a new Safeguarding lead and delegated authority to the those interviewing to be able to make a decision about an appointment. The closing date for applications is 24 November and interviews take place in December.

Trustees continued their discussion around the resilience of Home Mission Grant funding following the commissioned report, Trustees have initially agreed to two proposals from the report. There still is a considerable way to go before settling on a solution and over the next few months this will be kept as a high priority. In all discussions the pastoral care of all existing recipients was very considered very important and will be taken into consideration as more decisions are discussed and taken.

The moderator shared with council that more feedback that had been received after the RMTL appointment, trustees are still aware that a review of the appointing process needs to be had and opened up for wider input and discussion.

Both written and verbal reports were received by council from the safeguarding lead and the EBA representative that attends the Baptists Together CYF roundtable.

At this meeting Fiona informed the trustees that due to some personal circumstances she is no longer able to continue as Moderator and will be resigning from this position. Trustees are entitled to appoint an interim moderator up until the next general meeting.

The process to seek a new moderator will be shared with member churches in the new year.
