He is a light to reveal God to the nations,
and he is the glory of your people Israel!”
Luke 2:32 (NLT)
In some Church traditions 2 February is the date set aside to mark the act of Jesus’ parents presenting him at the temple, we read about in Luke 2. The account shows this significant moment early in the life of Jesus when Simeon and Anna recognise him as the Messiah.
It is always precious and exciting when someone first beholds Jesus as the saviour, they and we all need. We see that in the reactions of praise and thanksgiving from Simeon and Anna.
It is even more exciting to witness people grow, as they embrace what Jesus as saviour, means not just for them but for the world. Perhaps a key aspect of this continued growth is not losing that initial sense of awe and wonder, we experience, as part of recognising Jesus as the light, the whole world needs.
Have you ever noticed that the days that you have moments where you pause, and really take in some of the greatness of God all around you, are the days that seem to be the most meaningful?
This Sunday, 6 February, BMS World Mission is inviting churches to pray for the ongoing work of bringing fullness of life to all. At the heart of BMS’ grassroots work – which is focused on things like education, health, and justice – is people beholding Jesus for the first time. I wonder if we might spend some time this Sunday in prayer, to support BMS’ work, that is taking place in some of the least evangelised places, amongst some of the most marginalised people, many of whom are on the move, in search of safety and sanctuary.
