This week our thought was written by Jeniya Gwendu , Moderator EBA trustee board.
Last week I was sent this short story about a father and his watch.
A father before he died said to his son: “this is a watch your grandfather gave me, and this is more than 200 years old, but before I give it to you go to the watch shop on the first street, and tell him I want to sell it, and see how much it is worth?”
He went and came back to his father and said, “the watchmaker wanted to pay $5 because it is old”. Then he said to him, “now go to the coffeeshop”. He went and then came back, and said, “he wanted to pay $5”.
“Now go to the museum and show that watch”. He went, then came back to his father, “THEY OFFERED ME A MILLION DOLLARS FOR THIS PIECE!!!”
The father said “I wanted to let you know that the right place will recognize your value. Do not put yourself in the wrong place and get angry if you are not appreciated according to your worth. He who knows your value is he who appreciates you. Know your worth.”
After reading this article, Esau’s story came to mind. I wonder if Esau knew his worth when he sold his birth right for a single meal? (Genesis 25:29-34). Like many of us, Esau allowed a temporary need to cause him to forget the value of what he had. Many times, we choose to settle for less than God’s best to gain the instant gratification of people’s approval, acceptance, or validation.
I believe that, if we knew how valuable we are to God and to his purpose on this earth, we would not sell ourselves short or compromise our values. Therefore, it is important to know and remember just how valuable you are.
Galatians 4:7 reminds us that ‘ So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir of God through Christ’. God sees us as royalty and that is how we should value and conduct ourselves. Even when we go to places or meet people that do not value us, we must not underestimate how God values us.
We are God’s most valued precious possession. He knew our worth and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Below is a chorus I grew up singing which always reminds me of who I am and whose I am.
I hope this will encourage you to know your worth.
“we are heirs of the Father, we are joint heirs with the Son,
we are children of the Kingdom, we are a family, we are ONE”.
God bless you all. Jeniya (Moderator).
When we began to think about our house move, one of the things that Tracey said that she was going to miss was the island in the kitchen (you may have seen it in various EBA videos such as this one). The kitchen in our new manse is considerably smaller …
