‘Be still and know, that I am God’ (Psalm 46:10). This is the Bible verse that West Mersea Free Church greets its visitors with. Led by Rev Rob Hughes and his wife Jen, the church has been serving Mersea Island in Essex since its construction in 1805, when it was known as the Independent Chapel and by a few other names before that. Until 1805, apart from the Parish Church at West Mersea, there was no other place of worship, and non-conformists, such as Congregationalists and Baptists, met in barns for regular services. Now the congregation meets every Sunday morning and is equally alive during the week offering a variety of groups for people of all ages and backgrounds.
With more than 120 people attending regularly, West Mersea Free Church is also involved locally through weekly school visits and other events. Their services are also live-streamed on YouTube as they strongly believe in connecting with people from the outside not just ‘church people’.
West Mersea Free Church also runs ‘The Beach Club’ offering a range of groups for children of all ages, and a group for parents and toddlers, sharing Bible stories in a relatable way for everyone attending. It also supports The Christian Youth Outreach (CYO), a Christian charity supporting schools and youth groups in Colchester to help young people grow in life and faith, as well Operation Mobilisation Worldwide which provides aid to isolated communities and introduce God to the unreachable, Hands at Work and BMS.
