St Andrew’s Street Cambridge has a long and illustrious history and predates the street after which it is named. Dating from 1720 the church has been led by a number of long-serving and distinguished ministers. However, after a couple of recent ‘bumps in the road’ the church became mistakenly known as a ‘difficult church’. In response, Steve Langford was appointed as Interim Minister and tasked to prepare the church for the next long-term minister.
Even before the pandemic St Andrew’s Street was involved in a ministry to the homeless. However when, in response to the spread of Covid-19, the government called ‘everybody in’ the church opened its kitchens and cooked up to one hundred meals a day for those living in Travel Lodges and hostels.
During the pandemic the church moved online and now continues to run hybrid worship services. This has opened up new opportunities for ministry with some of our missionary friends able to share in our worship services from their current postings or home nations.
In 2021 the church took the bold step of entering into partnership with Cambridge Youth for Christ that will see part of their church centre, known as No. 40, re-developed into a drop-in and well-being centre for young people.
In 2022 the church ‘stepped up’ again as we opened our church centre to host English language classes for up to one hundred Ukrainians.
In 2023 we will be looking at what ministry might look like in the future and contributing to the Baptist Union consultation on the change to the Minister’s Code of Conduct.
