Shotgate is a residential area near Wickford in south Essex built from the 1930’s. Shotgate Baptist Church– which is now 90 years old — is the only church located there. The church has been without a minister for the past five years but is now looking into the prospect of appointing a Minister in Training. This was unanimously agreed by the church meeting and the process is already well underway.
The church meets each Sunday with a regular congregation of about thirty. There are those in the fellowship who lead services, supported by visiting speakers from other Baptist churches in the area. Moderator Andy Drake is a real encouragement to the church. On alternate months there is currently cafechurch on a Sunday and this is proving popular.
There is a full programme of weekday activities but fewer now than in the past. There is a Thursday Bible Study. On Fridays a very successful Cafe is held and also an adult art and craft club. Each month there is an over 50’s lunch club with up to 40 people from the local community attending. There are also activities for children and youth including ‘Sanctuary’ for 11-14 year olds which offers chat, games and outings.
• Please pray for the over 50’s from the community who come to weekday activities, harvest and Christmas but there is currently no transition into church.
• For God’s guidance with regard to appointing the right person to lead the church.
• For outreach into the local community and to be a witness as the only church in Shotgate.
• That the church remains community-minded and retains the desire to grow not just as a social centre, but by bringing more people into a living faith in Jesus.
