Pier Avenue Baptist Church is situated near the town centre of this well-known Essex coastal resort town, just a few minutes’ walk from the seafront. The Minister is Revd Sean Fountain and the church is actively involved in a range of regular worship mission activities.
In recent years the church has begun working with people who are homeless or in vulnerable housing situations, and people with mental health issues. The church has a house for homeless people which currently has two residents, who receive support for a period of two years, as they are helped to work through the problems that made them homeless initially.
On a Thursday the church runs a drop-in cafe for homeless people who will find a warm welcome and a cooked breakfast. There are housing support workers to help with accommodation problems, as well as a nurse and clinical psychologist who are there to help those who have physical and mental health issues.
As well as praying for their work with homeless people, the church are asking for prayer as they work through commissioning major works to remove asbestos from the basement, to replace flooring in their halls and reduce echo problems in one of their more recent halls, so that they will be able to open them up to the wider community.
• Pray that the church will find the right balance between the growing ministry they have with the homeless, and the existing ministry and mission of the church together with the significant works that need to be done to keep the premises sustainable.
• Pray too that the Lord will provide the necessary resources to fund existing and proposed projects as well as the people resources required. At the moment, the church is seeking to appoint a Parish Nurse – details are on the Pier Avenue website (http://www.pieravenuebaptistchurch.org.uk.)
